About EBI
The Employee Benefits Institute is a non-profit organization with a rich history of more than three decades of providing continuing education, resources and support for the employee benefits community.
The EBI story
In the fall of 1986, Michael J. Baker, then Assistant Dean at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law with responsibility for continuing legal education, was eager to expand the law school’s CLE offerings. Mike shared the idea for establishing an annual employee benefits symposium with John Utz at the Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne law firm. John, in turn, met with Tom Graves (Morrison, Hecker, Curtis, Kuder & Parrish), Al Martin (Shook, Hardy & Bacon), and Myron Sildon (Sildon and Kroeker), at the Kansas City Club to plot the future of what became The Employee Benefits Institute.
Following their initial meeting, they expanded their group to form a steering committee comprising Eric DeFrain (DeFrain Mayer, Inc.), Chuck Johnson (Butler Manufacturing Company), Jerry Kenefake (Hallmark Cards, Inc.), Bob Reiter (United Missouri Bank of Kansas City, n.a.), and Charlie Schutte (PriceWaterhouse).
The first program was held on Friday, June 5, 1987, at the Hyatt Regency. Approximately 120 individuals attended. Later EBI added additional workshops and events, expanding geographically as well as expanding in services to the benefits community.

Learn and network at EBI’s 32 Year Conference
Celebrating 30+ Years
Connect with other professionals at our employee benefits conference in more than just an across-the-desk setting and glean from the knowledge of more than 30 years of EBI.
EBI Board Members
From the very beginning,
EBI has incorporated professionals with expertise in labor and employment law as well as the practitioners who actually work with the employee benefits at their particular company. By incorporating both attorneys who specialize in ERISA as well as the company executives and HR personnel impacted by the provisions of ERISA, the group has maintained the balance between academia and practical application allowing them to become the premier resource for employee benefits in the Midwest.
Working together
What started through the UMKC CLE program has expanded to work with other law schools throughout the area, including Creighton University and Drake University. With regional workshops held in Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma and throughout Kansas and Missouri, the focus is truly regional in scope.
